Wynwood Walls: Miami Destination

Wynwood Art District

The statement, “Wynwood Art District should be a World Heritage Site” on Trip Advisor really caught my eye.  Normally I think about South Beach or Little Havana as the quintessential Miami but, Wynwood, what’s that?

Wynwood is a large area just north of downtown Miami—an old warehouse district—converted into a treasure trove of shops, bars and one of the largest open-air street-art installations in the world.  The large stock of warehouse buildings, mostly with no windows, are giant canvases for street art.

Wynwood is  located around 2nd Avenue between 20th and 36th Streets.  One of the most popular attraction is Wynwood Walls, where giant murals draw attention.

It was a great spot for a stroll on a sunny day.  Around each corner, the large murals captivated and invited conversation.  I enjoyed seeing a couple of photo shoots and other folks meandering.

We didn’t attend, but once-a-month a Art Walk is a gigantic and boisterous street fair with food and music and, of course, an overabundance of art.

Here are some photos I shot.   I couldn’t decide what to post so I posted lots of them. Enjoy.

At the end of our tour, we had a delicious brunch at SugarCane which was not too far away.  Have to recommend this restaurant.   Ambiance, service and food were fabulous.

Thanks, Kathy. It is a fascinating part of the city. I think it would be fun to go back on the Art Walk night. I’ll bet it would feel very different when full of people.

isn’t it interesting how such inventive environments invite ‘play’. The couple being photographed against one of the walls looked like they were pleased to have an opportunity to be a little bit silly.

Great observations. We had some silly moments ourselves.
